Cathleen S. Fisher, Ph.D. President
Dr. Cathleen S. Fisher has been engaged in transatlantic and German-American relations for over 25 years. She joined American Friends in 2008 as Executive Director. From 2002-2006, she was Deputy Director of the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS), The Johns Hopkins University, where she was centrally involved in management of all operations and programs in support of the Institute’s mission. Before joining AICGS, Fisher served for ten years as a Senior Associate at the Henry L. Stimson Center, where she focused on nuclear arms control, export controls, and transatlantic security issues. She has been a Fulbright scholar at the University of Bonn (1981-82), and has held fellowships at the Harvard Center for International Affairs, the Free University of Berlin, and the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt. She chairs the Advisory Council of the German Center for Research and Innovation and served on the American Chemical Society’s International Center Task Force. Fisher has taught at the Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University, in the National Security Studies Program at Georgetown University and in the Department of Political Science at Emory University. She holds a Ph.D. in Government and Politics from the University of Maryland, an M.A. in International Relations from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, and a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from George Mason University’s School of Public Administration. She has written numerous articles and monographs and has spoken in the United States and Asia on German-American and transatlantic relations, U.S. foreign policy, and the role of nongovernmental organizations in nuclear nonproliferation and arms control.

Virginia Page Barth Program Director for Alumni Relations and Development
Virginia Page Barth joined the staff of American Friends of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation on April 1, 2008 and serves as Program Director for Alumni Relations and Development. Virginia is responsible for the direction, planning and implementation of alumni activities and supports the American Friends Alumni Council and the Humboldtians on Campus. She also organizes and manages the German Chancellor Fellowship (Buka) orientation meetings and the tri-annual alumni meeting for the Bukas in the United States. Ms. Barth is responsible for leading and expanding American Friends development and fundraising efforts, including the annual appeal to alumni and friends. Virginia has experience in government relations at both The Mobil Corporation and Matsushita Incorporated, and worked for then Congressman Lindsey Graham on Capitol Hill. In the summer of 1990, she participated in an international business program in Hannover, Germany, where she developed a deep interest in the German people and German culture. She is originally from Greenville, South Carolina and earned a B.A. in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Margot Pfefferle Program Coordinator for Communications and Outreach
Margot Pfefferle serves as Program Coordinator for Communications and Outreach. Margot is a graduate of the University Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where she majored in German and Spanish Liberal Arts. During college she was a member of the Delta Phi Alpha German Honor Society, President of the German Club and recipient of the German Department’s Manfred Poitzsch Leadership Award. After graduation, she joined the North America office of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) in Washington, DC, where she has gained experience in office administration, targeted outreach, event coordination and promotions, and has developed an understanding of the German research landscape and its key players. She has spent time studying and or living abroad in Germany, Austria, Mexico, Spain and Peru and is an avid worldwide traveler, who loves learning about other cultures and languages. She currently serves as an Executive Board Member of the National Conference of State Societies (2010-2011 term). Margot represented the state of Wisconsin during the 2010 National Cherry Blossom Festival, later traveling to Japan to represent the United States in meetings with the Japanese prime minister and other dignitaries. Margot is responsible for presenting, producing and disseminating informational materials to publicize the grants and fellowships of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation; coordinating representation of AF and/or the AvH at external events; and tracking outcomes of outreach efforts.

Carolyn Brodbeck Executive Assistant and Office Adminstrator

Carolyn Brodbeck joined American friends in February 2011 as
Executive Assistant/Office Administrator. She provides support of the general
organizational operations of American Friends, in particular by assisting the
President with finances and operations functions, conducting research, acting
as a liaison to the Board of Directors, and overseeing office matters.
Carolyn double majored in German and Political Science and graduated magna cum
laude from Colgate University in May 2010. During her time at Colgate, she was
President of the German Club and studied abroad for a semester in Geneva, Switzerland
as well as in Freiburg, Germany. She received the German department award
and High Honors in German for writing a thesis on Herta Mueller’s Atemschaukel.
Carolyn brings to American Friends a range of non-profit experience, having
assisted in fund raising for the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, in communications
for the International Republican Institute, and in programs (the Young
Atlanticist initiative) for the Atlantic Council.
