American Friends of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

William M. Calder III Fellowship

Each year American Friends of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation awards one William M. Calder III Fellowship to a young, highly qualified German scholar to pursue research in classical studies with an established scholar who previously received a grant from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

A generous gift from William M. Calder III, William Abbott Oldfather Professor of the Classics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a recipient of the Humboldt Research Award in 1997, allowed American Friends to create the Calder Fellowship.

Eligibility
Young German scholars in classics who wish to pursue research in the United States and who are selected by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to receive a Feodor Lynen Fellowship are eligible for a Calder Fellowship. The Calder Fellowship offsets the financial contribution required by the Feodor Lynen Program from the U.S. institution.

Preference is given to scholars planning to do research at Columbia University, Harvard University, University of Colorado, University of Chicago, or University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign—all institutions where Prof. Calder studied or taught.

Fellowship
The Calder Fellowship is intended to complement the Humboldt Foundation's Feodor Lynen Fellowship and is awarded for a total of up to 12 months. The Calder Fellowship begins in August or as soon thereafter as the selected recipient begins his or her Lynen Fellowship. It is not retroactive. A Calder Fellow who receives an extension of his or her Lynen Fellowship may apply for an extension of the Calder Fellowship.

Selection
The Selection Committee meets in July and considers all scholars in the classics approved by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for a Feodor Lynen Fellowship within the previous 12 months.
