Humboldt Foundation Programs

Most of the fellowships and grants of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation are open to all nationalities. The programs most relevant for scholars resident in the United States are listed here. For more detailed information, including eligibility requirements and application forms, click on the name of the program. The Foundation particularly encourages application from and nominations of women.

Humboldt Research Fellowship:
For Postdoctoral Researchers | For Experienced Researchers
Two options are available—for researchers who received a doctoral degree fewer than four years prior to application and for researchers who received a doctoral degree fewer than twelve years prior to application. Researchers may spend between 6 and 24 months conducting research in Germany.

German Chancellor Fellowship
For career-oriented individuals who identify a German host and design a project to expand their professional expertise and experience. Prior knowledge of German is not required. Ten awards to U.S. citizens are given annually.

Transatlantic Cooperation in Research (TransCoop)
Support for a scholar from the United States or Canada and a German counterpart to launch a new collaboration. Matching funds are required. Selections made semi-annually.

Sofja Kovalevskaja Award
This award is open to early-career scholars whose publications have won them high acclaim as outstanding team leaders and who completed a doctoral degree with distinction within the past six years. The funds available over five years provide living expenses and enable the recipient to build a research team at the German university or research institution of their choice.

Humboldt Research Award
Direct applications are not accepted. German scholars nominate internationally recognized foreign researchers at the peak of their academic careers whose fundamental discoveries, insights, or new theories have had a lasting impact and who are expected to continue to produce cutting-edge results. Awardees are invited to spend up to one year at a German research institution.

Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award
Direct applications are not accepted. Established scholars working in Germany nominate internationally renowned scientists and scholars who received their doctoral degree within the past twelve years. Awardees are invited to spend between 6 and 12 months at a German research institution to conduct a project of their own design.

Feodor Lynen Research Fellowship:
For Postdoctoral Researchers | For Experienced Researchers
For German researchers wishing to work abroad with a host who has received a Humboldt fellowship or award. Program options are open to scholars who received their doctoral degree either fewer than four years or fewer than 12 years prior to application.
