|German Chancellor Fellowship
The German Chancellor Fellowship is intended for career-oriented individuals who identify a German host and design a project to expand their professional expertise and accomplishment. Ten awards are given to U.S. citizens annually.
The German Chancellor Fellowship Program was inaugurated in 1990 under the patronage of former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl to promote the transatlantic partnership between Germany and the United States. In 2002 the program expanded to include fellows from the Russian Federation, and in 2006 the program expanded to include fellows from the People's Republic of China.
German Chancellor Fellows form a special group among the alumni of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Younger at the time of selection and oriented towards career enhancement rather than advanced research, German Chancellor Fellows spend a portion of their year in activities as a group. The intensity of the shared experiences creates a strong bond among the members of any single "class." Reflections are written by the fellows after completion of their year.
Alumni participate in a two-day Orientation for new fellows prior to their departure for language courses and the one-year stay in Germany. A weekend meeting for all U.S. alumni of the program follows the Orientation every three years. The next meeting in the United States will take place in 2013. Alumni are encouraged to recruit potential applicants and to develop a professional network.
