American Friends of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

Who We Are

American Friends, located in Washington, DC, was established in 1999 and is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the United States tax code. The board of directors includes recipients of Humboldt Foundation grants and other individuals who share the goals of the Foundation.

The programs of American Friends include promoting Humboldt Foundation programs through mailings, articles, advertising, the Humboldtians On Campus (HOC) program, and exhibits at scholarly and scientific conferences; organizing and hosting functions for the more than 4,500 scholars residing in the United States who have received grants, fellowships, and awards from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Humboldtians); maintaining relationships with the German Embassy and with German and American scholarly, cultural, and educational organizations; and supporting activities which strengthen the transatlantic dialogue and cooperation.

American Friends raises funds for its activities and to support Foundation-related interests in the United States. Contributions from Humboldtians and from foundations, corporations, and individuals interested in international scholarly exchange may be in cash (check or money order), property (stocks, bonds, mutual funds, or real estate), or by bequest.

American Friends of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation coordinates its activities with the Alexander von Humboldt Association of America (AvHAA), an independent non-profit membership organization for Humboldtians residing in the United States. The AvHAA encourages professional collegiality among its members, reinforces contacts with German scientists and scholars, and promotes programs of the Humboldt Foundation. Members elect the board of directors, and membership dues support a newsletter and a bi-annual national meeting.
